A speech from an On Track Participant about their experience of the project

We had 14 young people come along to our end of year celebration event. We had to make last minute changes to our event due to the news of the new Covid-19 variant. To ensure we could make the event as safe as possible, we held the event at our next steps centre where all young people did a lateral flow test on arrival. We had a brilliant afternoon with activities, a quiz and awards. We had a participant stand up in front of everyone to do a speech, as well as a music performance. Below is the inspiring speech delivered by a young person involved with the On Track Project:

“I’d like to start with a quote from Mark Twain – an American writer, humourist, entrepreneur, publisher and lecturer. “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” I was previously at college doing Outdoor leadership but unfortunately my course was cut short due to COVID, and I struggled to find a job because many of the outdoor centres were closed for lockdown. My dream job is to work in Canada as an Outdoor Activity Leader, possibly doing bush craft work or water sports, in addition to snowboarding. I started On Track in June of this year.

I was very nervous about attending the first introduction with Jade at On Track, but I pushed myself and got on well. After a couple of weeks, I met my coach Luca and from the moment we met I could tell that we would get on. That’s thanks to the amazing job that On Track did to match me with the right coach. Since then, I can safely say that after attending most of the activities and meeting with Luca on a regular basis I have become more confident around others. I also have more self-belief and I’m better at decision making.

My favourite session is football because it keeps me active, and I get to see the same people on a regular basis. I also enjoy the art sessions – previously I was told that I wasn’t good at art but now I believe in myself and my abilities, I can relax and enjoy being creative. So, I would encourage you in the new year to try a session that you haven’t been to before – You might just surprise yourself!

In conclusion, with the help of Luca, I have set myself some smaller goals to help climb the ladder of success, such as completing my English functional skills and getting a job closer to home first to test if it’s really what I want. Going Back to Mark Twain – The secret of getting ahead is getting started – and thanks to Luca and everyone at On Track I have got started, and you can too.”

Thank you – On Track Participant, 20 years old
